It is with much devastation and disappointment to acknowledge the recent death of Def Jam Poet, Will "Da Real One" Bell. He was shot multiple times right in front of his Literary Cafe in North Miami early this morning shortly after closing up. I immediately thought that if I were still in Miami, I may have been at the cafe this memorial weekend to witness this unfortunate event. SO many were touched by this man's life. His purpose was to spread words of peace and hope among the youth. He modeled what it meant to overcome hardship by using his God-given talent to provide a platform for others to share their creativity. He was one of the nicest, coolest, and most passionate poets you could meet. You could literally see the passion in his eyes when he spoke, the comfort he felt on stage, whether it be cracking jokes about his past or encouraging people to embrace love. Will gave me my first book signing for Liberate Me at the Literary Cafe where my friends and family gathered for another Saturday night of spoken word and soulful music. He did everything in his power to create the ambiance he believed would unite us and promote positive energy. The level of his influence along with his unmasked accomplishments speak for themselves; he was a leader in his community, a force to be reckoned with in the poetry scene, and just a great spirit to be around. I don't know the details of what happened nor WHY it had to go down the way it did.....but I do know that it's essential to remember and cherish the fond memories. To hold onto the legacy he left behind, the dreams he fought to sustain, and the lives that have been forever changed. With every tragedy, there must be a lesson learned to accompany the mourning. I hope as a people we can cease singing the words "a change gon' come" and realize change is an active, deliberate movement that is ever-present and within our grasp every minute of every day. It's not somewhere in the distant future, but in the palm of our hands and in the passion of our hearts right now. R.I.P Will.....
