I'll leave you with this:
"Allow your heart to teach your mind to form your lips to speak your dreams into existence." - Moi :)
Being someone you never intended to be
is exhausting as much as it reeks--
absurdity comes to mind
the unwanted energy expelled to perform
someone else's will grabs onto your body
like an impending disease battling acceptance
You were compelled to hasten to the unknown
a rotund field, a massive enough pie for everyone to feast
but then you realize you don't like pie
in fact, it's not just the flavor you've developed an
but the whole idea of glazed apples shielded by a coat
of golden crust repulses you!
Why then, after this discovery, do you resume this
outlandish crowd-pleasing ritual? Why can't you
flaunt key lime or dabble in blueberries?
Soon this nauseatingly bland excuse for a contest
comes to a halt
only, unlike the rest of them, you're still empty
not slightly hungry or teased
they lick the succulent glaze off their lips
while you reach for a breat of air, desperately hoping
no one notices
When will you create your escape?

So I've been challenged to think about the many things I've learned throughout my journey up until this very moment and to write them all down. Simple enough, right? I really had to think about this though. We go through so much that makes life seem overwhelming, we owe it to ourselves to recollect the great experiences we've had and to use them as stepping stones. Good or bad, happy or sad, everything we've endured up until now was necessary to shape the person we've become. We're all guilty of dwelling on the negatives and pretending the positives hold little to no weight in the grand scheme of things. But in my continued effort to refocus my mind, transform my thoughts and change my perspectives, I plan to tackle this little task with an understanding of the impact it will have on me and how others view and treat me.
Here are my top 3 I'm willing to share about the things my journey has taught me. Don't be shy. Make your list too! It may be an eye opener for you...you know, put things in perspective :)
1. Independence. Many of us share this similar value. Not the "I don't need nobody and I'm an island" type of independence. But the kind that makes us aware of our true selves, what we want, and take full responsibility for the choices we make. Yeah.
2. Humility. This isn't a very common characteristic in our day. But for some of us who have had the opportunity to escape our own worlds and empathize with others, we tend to appreciate where we are and what we have a lot better. You'd be surprised how far a heart of sincere gratitude will take you.
3. Forgiveness. What's allowed me to embrace this over the years, especially recently, is the effect I've seen it have on others close to me who have chosen to hold grudges. I can't tolerate this lifestyle because not only is it limiting, but it stifles growth.
All of these have contributed to who I am today and how I deal with different situations. As my list expands, I encourage you to do the same. Recall specific incidents when you've had to put a desired characteristic into practice when it wasn't easy. In a world where we don't always receive the affirmations we want from others, it's time to take matters into our own hands and recognize our God-given strengths :-)
